Five Signs Your Car Key Needs Replacing
Learn the warning signs that a worn vehicle key, remote fob or transponder may need replacing before it causes a lockout or starting problem.
Five Signs Your Car Key Needs Replacing
A worn vehicle key or failing fob often gives you a little warning before it stops working completely. Spotting the signs early can save you from a lockout or a car that will not start.
1. The key blade is bent or worn
A tired key can damage the lock or ignition over time. If the blade looks thin, twisted, or rounded, a replacement or spare key is worth arranging.
2. The remote only works sometimes
Intermittent locking, weak range, or buttons that need repeated presses can point to a failing fob, battery issue, or damaged circuit board.
3. The immobiliser warning appears
If the vehicle recognises the remote but will not start, the transponder or programming may need attention.
4. You only have one working key
A spare key is usually simpler and cheaper to arrange before the last key is lost or broken.
5. The key sticks in the ignition
Resistance in the ignition can be caused by a worn key, damaged barrel, or debris. Do not force it, as that can make the repair more involved.
Auto locksmith tip: If your key is becoming unreliable, arrange a spare before it becomes an emergency. It is much easier to work from a working key than from a lost-key situation.
